Iran

Iran is glued to Afghanistan – they share one big border – and in Iran they are very strict when it comes to opium. High prices, tough laws. “Iran also accounts for 84% of total opiate seizures by law enforcement agencies in the world, interdicting tens of thousands of tons of opiates annually.” Since 1880 they killed tens of thousands of drug addicts and traffickers. And 130 years later, in 2001, out of the total of 170.000 inmates in Iran, 100.000 were drug addicts or traffickers. They have thousands of soldiers across the borders to prevent drugs from being smuggled from Afghanistan. Tough as hell! And pointless as hell. Hundreds of soldiers die each year battling the drug cartels that use rockets and heavy machine guns to penetrate the other tribe and trade their drugs. (source)
